Non-Duality

My philosophical outlook is governed by what is known as “non duality”.  I believe all the great world wisdom traditions are underpinned by the idea that the ultimate reality comprises a non dual, inclusive and completely undefinable essence.  This essence is variously known as God, the Brahman, Allah, the Tao, the Buddha within, the Monad, or the Absolute. And it cannot be known other than by merging with it. The good news is that because the individual essence of each one of us is not separate from this universal essence, we ALL have the ability to realise this to be so. Ultimately it’s our choice. The fact that the various religious traditions seem to crumble, become distorted and contaminated with dogma is directly the result of individuals seeking power and influence, then codifying their limited and partial take upon the universal teachings in books, creeds, codes of conduct etc. But behind all of that lies the truth of what I am and what you are – and that is characterised by love, well being and consciousness. And by use of the teachings of Mindfulness and Meditation we can all come to that understanding.

About Michael

I have practiced Mindful Philosophy for some 35 years, and tutored it, given talks, organised workshop days and discussion groups for 20. My interest evolved out of childhood experiences as a boy chorister in the great English cathedral of Ely. Later, I took a look at Eastern philosophy, and became initiated into Transcendental Meditation in 1968. I joined an esoteric school (School of Economic Science) where I am still involved.

I find the practical and down to earth approach of Mindful Philosophy to help on a day to day basis with the practicalities of life since I retired from work (as a surveyor specialising in the ancient buildings found in our area). I have a wonderful family life with Lyn my wife, and two grown up children (Jonathan and Louise) and their delightful families. I like good conversation, good food and drink, travel, singing with Granta Chorale (Cambridge based chamber choir) and playing and listening to good music.

My wife and I live in an old farmhouse where there are apples, plums and grass for cattle. I make apple juice, and we make jams and marmalade. I have an old tractor which is invaluable for getting the logs for our cosy fire and heating the room which houses our regular mindful philosophy group. I see to the vegetables, and keep the flower areas as neat as I can. It all makes for a lovely English cottage garden. And then there are the 2 spaniels – great company and for exercise of both man and beast!
